Progetto BLUEMED

Data: 10/11/2016

BLUEMED - Plan/test/coordinate Underwater Museums, Diving Parks and Knowledge Awareness Centres in order to support sustainable and responsible tourism development and promote Blue growth in coastal areas and islands of the Mediterranean - Project co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund

THE BLUEMED PROJECT - Plan/test/coordinate Underwater Museums, Diving Parks and Knowledge Awareness Centres in order to support sustainable and responsible tourism development and promote Blue growth in coastal areas and islands of the Mediterranean

The BLUEMED Project aims to support competent government authorities in developing strategies, plans and policies for local coastal and island economies of the Mediterranean region in order to adopt sustainable and responsible models for tourism development.

This aim will be achieved by planning, testing and coordinating Underwater Museums, Diving Parks and Knowledge Awareness Centres (KACs). The main objective is the enhancement and protection of underwater natural and cultural heritage, in accordance with the UNESCO 2001 Convention, the raising of public awareness and the tourism attractiveness. Main focus is on:

a)    Delivering a process scheme for supplying local/regional authorities with a multi-disciplinary plan (management models, innovative technologies) for Underwater Museums, Diving Parks and Knowledge Awareness Centres (KACs) to be developed in the pilot sites of ‘Capo Rizzuto’ (Calabria, Italy), ‘Baia’ (Campania, Italy), ‘Western Pagasitikos’ (Sporades, Greece) and ‘Cavtat’ (Croatia); a fifth pilot site has been recently added: ‘Epidaurus’, Greece.

b)    Promoting innovation in the diving industry and improving divers experience through innovative diving services and technologies.

c)    Attracting an important part of the increasing number of people who choose diving tourism.

d)    Introducing the wider public to underwater cultural heritage by means of 3D immersive visualization in museum exhibitions and KACs.

e)    Setting up an ‘Underwater Natural and Cultural Routes in the Mediterranean’ web-based platform for unifying the tourism promotion strategy and networking of the Med underwater natural and cultural heritage sites.
